Title of Research Project
Function and taxonomic diversity of mycorrhizas in grassland.

Abstract

The aim is to provide data on biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi at the Sourhope grassland site, in Ecotron experiments, and for a representative range of other UK grassland types. At the Sourhope site, measurements of carbon flux through AM fungal hyphae will be integrated with the biodiversity data in replicate plots with different treatments. Fungal diversity will be assessed by AM fungal-specific PCR amplification of 18S rRNA sequences from roots and soil hyphae, followed by restriction digestion, denaturing gradient electrophoresis or sequencing. Carbon flux will be determined from AMS measurements of 14C depletion in soil hyphae an root-free soil.
