Title of Research Project

Diversity and functional activity of Enchytraeidae in an upland pasture

Abstract
There is no existing functional classification for enchytraeid species, although we have known for several decades that they are the latest component of faunal biomass in certain upland ecosystems. The level of ignorance is largely due to problems with taxonomy and culturability. We, therefore, have two main objectives. Initially, we will produce a robust and objective taxonomy of enchytraeid species at Sourhope by integrating existing taxonomic knowledge with new approaches in molecular genetics. Using this taxonomy, we will then characterise the diversity of enchytraeids at Sourhope; not only determining taxonomic diversity but also, for the first time, the functional role of enchytraeid species.
